It's essentially an organic and built-in way to adjust the difficulty, and I always appreciate that.Īnd it's a good looking and sounding game too, at least by the standards of its era.Īll in all, I think it's very good, and definitely one of my favorites on the system. And if you're so inclined, you can grind to increase your weapon skill, and if you're really determined (and patient), you can make yourself OP. But if you stick with it, you gain skill at a decent enough rate naturally that that's just a temporary (and entirely reasonable really) issue. The weapon skill systems works well, in that switching to a new and ultimately more powerful weapon will likely actually be detrimental in the short run, since you'll likely do less damage with it, since you're unfamiliar with it. The process by which you discover new places and new characters and learn new parts of the story unfolds naturally. The basic conflict that serves as its foundation is introduced simply and straightforwardly without a bunch of tedious exposition, then grows more complex and more nuanced the further you get into it, so it sweeps you along with it. So instead it was set up so that the missions were just difficult enough to be challenging and entertaining but not so difficult that it would require multiple restarts to get through them, so the story keeps moving along.Īnd the RPG aspects of it are really well done. In fact, I tend to think that was deliberate - that if it had played more like something like Cybernator - play until you die, restart and try to make it further the next time and eventually beat the level - players would've potentially lost track of the thread of the story. The only criticism I might have of it is that the action parts of it tend to be a bit too easy, but I can forgive that.
